Asheville Marathon. Why I Want YOU To Run!

Over the years, I've set a few goals.
Invited some friends to join me along the way.
And we have had the best time, seen the most amazing things AND gotten healthier along the way.

But now, I have an invitation to extend.
Come with me and RUN or WALK at the Biltmore Estate next year on March 12/13th. The Half Marathon is on the 12th and the Full Marathon is on the 13th.

I am an ambassador because I LOVE THIS RACE.

You can register here: http://ashevillemarathon.com/

I ran it last year along with the 15k and 10k at the Biltmore Estate and as awarded the ROYAL TRIFECTA for having run all three races on the Estate. So were these jokers.

We love running at the Biltmore. Because you get to run in front of THIS HOUSE. How cool is that? Pretty awesome pay off.

Also running in Asheville. You will see people you can't find anywhere else.
See the rat tail on the women to the left in the picture below? This was from five years ago.
We ran into this same woman at race last weekend.
SHE HAD THE SAME RAT TAIL JUST LONGER.

So set a goal! Get out there. Sweat once a day. From now until March. Register early because:
1. You get a discount.
2. This race will sell out. We anticipate it being sold out by early Fall.

Day 8: #SharingStreak Michelle Bailey

Michelle Bailey's Father who served in the Air Force for 20 years. He is currently surviving with Leukemia. He has also had cancer in the prostate and melanoma. What a survivor!

Michelle Bailey is another neighborhood friend of mine. Her son and mine hang out together and we all get to play on fun snow days!

Michelle always posts inspirational items on Facebook that make you think and encourage you too look further into the world. I have come to find out that is because she has been profoundly impacted by cancer through the fight that her father has been through. A 20-year veteran in the Air Force, her father is currently surviving with Leukemia. He is also in remission from cancer of the prostate AND melanoma! SHEWWWEE.

Here is Michelle's story:

The person I am honoring is my dad, Rick Bailey. I am honoring him for his service in the Air Force for 20 years. He is also an inspiration and an example of pure strength. He was diagnosed with Prostate cancer first and then Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML), then with Melanoma. Prostate was removed and given a clean bill of health. Then the CML, it is chronic, so it is a continuing illness. He is on a chemo pill where it has brought his blood levels back to normal! PTL! The melanoma was removed and again given a clean bill of health. He has shown nothing but strength through all of it. He is "living with leukemia" because you cannot say he is cured from this. My best friend Jessica has been a huge strength to me. Her mom died from cancer a few months before my dad was first diagnosed. I called her crying and she told me she'd give me five min to feel sorry for myself and then I had to suck it up and be strong for my dad! She was right in everything she said. And my God has been someone I can talk to, cry to, and ask why to. I know He will give me the guidance and strength I need to help my dad with what he needs. Psalm 138:3: "in the day when I cried out, You answered me, and made me bold with strength in my soul." I want others to find hope and strength in the knowledge that God is there, he is listening. He has a plan, and He will heal, either in the flesh or in the Heaven where there is no more pain. Don't be afraid to be afraid, everyone is allowed to. But show support and strength to your loved one who is in need of it. You are to be there for them, not them for you! My pump up song is "Oceans, Where my feet may fail", or "Amazing Grace, My Chains are Gone."

I am so thankful to all of you!
I am now 1/3 of the way to my goal for the Marine Corps Marathon and the #sharingstreak is now in its second week!

I love hearing everyone's stories! It is so good to learn so much more about my friends and their hearts.
Let's keep it going!

Turning the Page

I finished my third half-marathon this year on Saturday! And I had a personal record in the toughest conditions I could have ever imagined.

The first mile was fairly well lit with street lights and my own adrenaline. But after that, it was like running well...running in the dark with 1,000 other people. Except, there was oncoming traffic. Seriously. Oncoming traffic. Like buses.

Around mile 3, ALL the lights went out. Running in pitch black dark at 6:20 up (straight up) a road to then encounter the toughest road in Asheville. Slight uphill, with speed bumps every 800 yards and broken pavement. In the dark. It was crazy.

But I was feeling good. So good that I didn't believe my runkeeper lady who was telling me my split times. The first mile 8:02, 2nd: 8:07 and I kept dropping. While I was going uphill. It was insane.

Around mile 7, I was starting to fade a little. I'd had a fast previous mile and knew that I had 1/2 of the race left to go and that was when my NYC playlist totally delivered a gem to me. A song I haven't heard the entire time I've been training: Country Song Played Backwards by Rascal Flatts. This was a song put on the list by Will Odom and it was what Matt and Will came out to every meal at Frontier this summer. I literally laughed outloud and my whole mood was lifted.

The next mile, Matt surprised me at the foot of the toughest climb in Asheville. 1000 feet in elevation in one mile. You just have to keep moving. I cranked out a 9:30 mile beating my best time by almost two minutes.

I was fired up!

I ended up finished the race in 1:44:28. Which is right at 7:58 miles for 13.1 STINKING MILES in the MOUNTAINS on what is regarded as one of the toughest certified half-marathons in the country. And I feel good. Like really good.
Natalie Knauer and me with our finisher medals.
Yes. I'm wearing a beanie and a long sleeved shirt. Not pictured are the gloves I'm wearing. When I'm done running-I GET COLD. Like hypothermic cold. Thankfully, I was prepared on Saturday!

So good that I'm not too scared that I have a 42 mile week ahead of me with an 18-miler next Saturday. Eeeep. Ok, maybe a little scared.

But I'm only 35 days away from the NYC Marathon which feels like its going to be here in a blink of an eye. The weeks are passing SO QUICKLY now.

I'm pumped.

It has been the biggest blessing to run with Inheritance of Hope. I have been MORE blessed to run with this organization than I could have ever believed. I don't know how to describe it. But it gives all this work depth and meaning. And I love every minute. I've met families impacted by IOH and volunteers, supporters in the last few weeks and they have blown me away by their passion to help families and care for them.

It has really kept me going through the tough days and miles.
If you haven't donated and would like to, let's do this thing! I'm still fundraising even though I've met my goal. All the money still goes to families fighting terminal illness! Inheritance of Hope.

The Day Lululemon Called

Imagine your typical Tuesday afternoon.

Then, you get this phone call:
"Hey Leslie, I read your story in the paper. And I heard you talking last night about your passion for Inheritance of Hope, your friends and the marathon and I just want to do something for YOU. I'm at Lululemon. What are your sizes?"

After I picked my jaw up from the ground, I scrambled to remember my sizes because Lululemon tags are almost as long as receipts from CVS so I always rip them out.
I figure it out and relay the information.

Five minutes later, my friend calls back and says, "I told your story to the management here and they want to give you a whole outfit. How fast can you get down here?"

AFTERNOON RESCHEDULED.

I make a mad dash down to Kichen Place in Biltmore to the Lululemon store where the nicest people in the world work (and work out and play and maybe have the most fun anywhere) and they greeted me with confirmation of FREE OUTFIT for raising money and running the race and they thought that was awesome.

So I got down to business. This is my pre-Lululemon clothing transformation. I am clearly GIDDY.

This is me in the Race Me Short Sleeve Shirt and the Speed Tight. I LOVED this shirt. The pants had a lot of extra material. Which they did tell me they could hem, but I like a crop pant typically so this wasn't really for me. My face tells you how much I love everything I am wearing. I could run 20 miles or go to sleep. It's all so comfy.

Here I am in the Track and Train Tank and the Mod Moves Crop. Super Cute! But as a former soccer player, I just can't get into the polka dots. If I was buying it just to go to aerobics class or run in fun 5k's around here, I would be WAY into it. These pants fit like a dream and so did the top. But I really don't know what the weather will be like in NYC in 7 weeks, I had to pass.

I obviously did like the pants. They had pockets on the side of the legs (which I would never use) but they added a cute detail. And they were so comfy. But here is where I hit my stride. I tried on this Run Swiftly Tech Long Sleeved Shirt that literally feels like my baby blanket. It is so soft. WINNER.

So I retuned to the running shirt I liked (Race Me Short Sleeved Shirt) and paired it with the Fast Cat Skirt in all black. Quick side bar here: If you are like me at all and have a slight problem with a little pee pee when you run, get a running skirt. No one will KNOW. It covers your "zone" and you look SUPER CUTE. <<<<<<<<

So this is the outfit I chose! I've run in it three times this week-that should tell you something. I absolutely love it.

Here are some awesome things to keep in mind about Lululemon because if you see their prices, you might have a heart attack.

I run in their items almost every day and none show wear and tear. I've had a pair of pants for almost two years that I have run in at least weekly and they look brand new. I definitely can't say the same about ANYTHING I've bought at Target, Marshalls or whatever. My Nike pants have held up but they can get pretty stinky.

Lululemon running gear has (I know this sounds bogus-but I'm telling the truth, it works) an anti-stink fabric fiber. My clothes just don't smell bad. Have you ever been next to someone running at the gym and their clothes have that "sour been in the washer too long" smell? Doesn't happen with Lululemon clothing. I swear.

No chafing. Maybe TMI, but whatevs. They have the seams on the outside of the clothes so there is no rubbing when you're running.

I've bought cheap running clothes and you pay for what you get. A bad run that makes it hard to believe that people like to do this for hours. Get the right gear that makes you feel amazing and watch what your body can do.

OH! I forgot the most important thing about Lululemon clothing--it pulls you together. Like, it tightens your bottom and core up because of the design. So you LOOK better than you actually do. See examples above.  If you ever see someone at the gym and think, man--they look awesome. Why don't I look like that. Check for the label. I bet you they are wearing Lululemon pants. NO JOKE.

Also, this brings up an important rule. Running pants are not real pants. They are dangerous to men everywhere. So, take heed. Wear them running. Wear them to work out. Then change into PANTS. Otherwise you will attract attention. And maybe you like that. Maybe you don't. But you've been warned.

I am SOOOO grateful to Lululemon at Kitchin Place for being so awesome to me. I got a whole outfit PLUS the long sleeved shirt thanks to my amazingly generous friend. Go! Try them out! You won't regret it.

Inspired!

I just watched this video from ING NYC Marathon and it got me so pumped for the race. I mean PUMPED! I got so teary eyed thinking about how I am going to get to join in this experience in just under two months. I can't believe it.

If you have the time, it is WELL WORTH IT.

Define Hope

Can you come up with a strong definition of the word "hope"?

Wikipedia says:
Hope is the state which promotes the belief in good outcomes related to events and circumstances in one's life. Despair is often regarded as the opposite of hope.[1] Hope is the "feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best" or the act of "look[ing] forward to something with desire and reasonable confidence" or "feel[ing] that something desired may happen".[2] Other definitions are "to cherish a desire with anticipation"; "to desire with expectation of obtainment"; or "to expect with confidence".[3]

The Bible says:
1 Peter 1:3  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

Zephaniah 3:17 The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

Hebrews 11:1  Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

CS Lewis says:
“Most people, if they had really learned to look into their own hearts, would know that they do want, and want acutely, something that cannot be had in this world. There are all sorts of things in this world that offer to give it to you, but they never quite keep their promise.
“At present we are on the outside… the wrong side of the door. We discern the freshness and purity of morning, but they do not make us fresh and pure. We cannot mingle with the pleasures we see. But all the pages of the New Testament are rustling with the rumor that it will not always be so. Someday, God willing, we shall get “in”… We will put on glory… that greater glory of which Nature is only the first sketch.
We do not want to merely “see” beauty–though, God knows, even that is bounty enough. We want something else which can hardly be put into words–to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it."

Why is hope so hard to wrap our heads around?
Because so often we want to use the word "so" at the end of "hope". As in, "I hope so..." Hope is based on a future that is not seen and we have no control over it. But it is as C.S. Lewis puts it, "fresh and pure" due to the untainted nature of our desires not yet being dashed by the world.

I started pinning several images from pinterest that gave me great visuals of "hope" as I run for Inheritance of Hope that I want to keep in mind. There are families, kids, parents, those with a terminal illness that are living in fear for the future, not the reality that hope has been sealed up in Christ. We are on the outside, the "wrong side of the door" like Lewis says. It is so hard to see the new reality that is being created for us.

When I'm running, I want hope to make me glad. I want it to make me patient. When I get in trouble, I want hope to help me to never stop praying.

I run for hope.
It's so hard to wrap your head around it.

I want it to be said when people see me running they see hope!

Every Runner Has a Reason

I am proud to announce that I am running in the New York City Marathon on November 3, 2013! I am 19 weeks away from Marathon Sunday and I can not believe it is going to happen.

I have run 21 days straight here in Colorado on my running streak and I am not going to lie, this week is going to be the hardest ever to try to pull of as I am going to be on planes and buses and with 55 high school students on a massive road trip. But, we will see if I can do it. The reason I am running?

I have a few:
I went to high school on Staten Island in New York. I have always wanted to run the NYC Marathon. This year when it was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy and the devastation on Staten Island in particular, I really wanted to run. It became a passion of mine.

Then, I found out I could run in the marathon if I partnered with a charity. The charity buys race bibs and then you raise money for them. They organize a team and you get to run the race. The big problem is finding a charity you believe in and want to raise money for.

Many of you remember my friend Amy Patwa who passed away in January. She spoke about a charity called the Inheritance of Hope that sent her, her husband Adam and their daughter Charis on a retreat to the Magic Kingdom in May of last year. They did all kinds of great things and had a focused time to discuss her end of life, their plans and what the future would look like when she passed away. It turned out to be one of the last things that she was able to actively take part in. As she said just a few months later, "The timing of this was perfect. I couldn't walk around the Magic Kingdom now!"

It turns out, this charity raises their funds through runners. And now it is a a charity that I have become passionate about alongside Young Life.

They have a team of 8 runners that are training and raising funds nationwide for families with children that have a parent with a life-threatening illness. I am hoping to raise or exceed my goal of $5,000. This will be a joyful fundraiser that helps to create a legacy of hope within a family that is facing tremendous medical challenges.

Inheritance of Hope (www.InheritanceOfHope.org) helps young families who face the terminal illness of a parent build their legacies through Legacy Retreats: four day all-expenses-paid events where families come together to make memories, build a community of support, and gain tools to manage the challenges they face.  Inheritance of Hope also funds a $1,000 Legacy Scholarship for college-bound seniors living with a terminally ill parent and offers various other support services that address the deep needs of these families.

The Inheritance of Hope helps to turn a difficult, awful circumstance into one that focuses on the hope that we have in Christ and provides counsel, support and love to families as they struggle to do that in the face of mountain medical bills, daily bad news from physicians and quite simply...trying to raise children.

I am raising money to help send a family on retreat when they need it most.
To provide hope and rest for them.

This verse gives you good insight on the name of the charity:
"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time." ~ 1 Peter 1:3-5

I know what it has meant for me and my family simply to come out to Colorado for a month and we aren't facing a major life illness. It has been such a blessing!

Would you help me to give a focused, retreat for a family through the Inheritance of Hope?

This is my fundraising page if you would like to join in. Inheritance of Hope Fundraising Page

There are a LOT of weeks to go until the marathon. It would be so encouraging to have the fundraising taken care of and to know I am running for ALL OF YOU!

I am running in the Asheville 1/2 Marathon on September 27 and then the New York City Marathon on November 3. WOO-HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Around Here

Matt and around 60/70 Young Life associate men began today what is being called "Chubbiest Loser". These boys are all vying for the rights of chubbiest loser in the next three and half months.

I am not permitted to post the before picture nor the before weight.
But let's just say it looked something like this:

I kid. I kid.

He is not nearly that big.
But like most people who "meet" with people for a living, nearly every meeting is over a meal or has food somehow involved in it.
So he has a little extra "padding" these days. Who doesn't?

So he, and by he, I mean WE are doing this chubbiest loser project.
It should be something worth reporting on. If nothing else, to share the highs and lows of detoxing from the extra 3500 calories a day that we have been consuming over Christmas.

Already, its only Day 1 and we are STARVING and we have been eating all day long.
Just none of the food involves butter, peanut butter, chocolate chips, powdered sugar or icing. It has been a sad day. Except that we have worked out, eaten a healthy breakfast, vegetables, almonds, hummus, cottage cheese and WATER.

So this is the plan:
Drop soda.
Add exercise. Daily.
Walk Ranger. Daily.
Drink lots of water. Daily.
No more chips. Maybe pretzels if we are desperate. (potatoes make you  more hungry after you eat them and leave you feeling less full. Drop the chips!)
If hungry, grab a handful of nuts or baggie of veggies.
Eat at home. No more eating out for dinner.

First weigh in is in two weeks.
The best part about doing this? You don't really want to sit around if you have nothing to eat.
We are getting stuff done!
Cleaned out the garage.
Laundry is done.
Met some people for work.
Dog is walked.
We have lots of more energy! Who knows how long this is going to last? PRAY FOR US! Join us.

I have started a pin board on pinterest with lots of recipes and inspiration to get you started:

Running on Ice

Last night while driving, I was listening to a song that I hadn't heard since college:
Falling Down by Vertical Horizon.

And I remember every single word to this song because it meant so much to me. And it still does. The words ring true because of these lines:

Hating, lying to myself
I'm tired of telling myself it's OK
To be this tired
Just sick and tired of the turns the world takes
And the people that it makes us be
And lately it appears to me that

And I'm falling
Falling down
Falling
Falling down

But the big BIG time lines in this song that really got me in college and get me now are these:
Where does the time go
Spinning my wheels
Standing still
It's like running on ice
I only gain a little distance when I fall

I only gain a little distance when I fall.
Sometimes life can feel like that. Just a hamster on a wheel and you aren't making forward motion. Except when you take a risk and it doesn't turn out like you plan, you aren't happy with it and you learn a "life lesson." Is it worth it? Yes. Does it hurt to fall? Every time.
Can you avoid the pain, hurt and exhaustion and yet still get the joy of "distance"? I doubt it.

Playlist Friday

I haven't felt much like running this week. We've all been exhausted with it being the week of the YL Banquet. But I did get out and run some.
Mostly because I am playing soccer this Fall and I can't look like a turd with shinguards on out there.

So this is the playlist of the week.
Enjoy!

Gimme Three Steps-Lynyrd Skynyrd
Chattahoochee-Alan Jackson
Once Bitten Twice Shy-Great White
Walking on Sunshine-Katrina and the Waves
Shake It-MetroStation
California Gurls-Katy Perry
Dynamite-Taio Cruz
Fire Starting-Sean Kingston
Bad Romance-Lady Gaga
Home-Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros
Kids-MGMT

Yep, that's me. Completely random but singing really really loud while running. And, in case you doubt me on this one. Just try to not run while listening to Chattahoochee by Alan Jackson.

That song has an awesome beat and it always makes think of how Robin Plemmon's changed the lyrics from "I will was willing but she wasn't ready" to "I was chilling and her name was Betty" so they could sing the song in YL club.

So, I settled for a cheesburger and grape snow cone; dropped her off early but didn't go home...

Oh man, it almost makes me want to go run RIGHT NOW.

Cooper River Bridge Run

Now that it has been a week since we ran the Cooper River Bridge Run, I thought it would be appropriate to bring you an update on how we did :)

We traveled down to Charleston (without our kids-amazing!). We means me, Amy Noll, Alicia Keel (sophomore from Montreat), Matt, Ben Johnson and Brandon Club (freshman from UNCA).
We stayed at Matt's cousins house and it was awesome to have an amazing house, with real beds to go to sleep in the night before a race.
Ben Johnson's mom (who was on a vacation in Charleston) made us a dinner along with a few other of their friends who were running the race. Again, super nice to have a home cooked meal and not have to fight 38,000 runners for dinner in Charleston that night.

The group at 6am. Bleary-eyed and freezing.
We had to get up at 5am in order to get across the bridge in time and for Ben to be able to drive the car BACK across the bridge into Charleston. So we arrived for our 8am race at 6. Awesome.
It was also freezing. Like 40 degrees freezing. Luckily for us, we ALL have been running in that kind of weather all winter long, so it suited us. But still-not exactly what we had in mind. I was so grateful for my running gloves and my base layer shirt. SO GRATEFUL.

In order to warm up, I joined in with a group of runners doing the electric slide.
You'll do anything. I swear.
We also peed 3 times in one hour. We got out of the port-a-potties and then got immediately back in line.
Ugh .

But the race then started, and because I was hanging with Alicia Keel who paces out 8 minute miles and Amy Noll...we started a blistering pace. But I was surprisingly fine. But as we approached the peak of the bridge, I couldn't hang with Alicia any longer and lost her in the crowd. Somehow, I dropped Amy Noll though. So I ended up just running the race alone. Kind of stinky, but there was no one to worry about so I just ran. Hard.

I ended up finishing with a time 49:39. Which is just over 8 minute miles. 8 MINUTE MILES! WooHOO. I was really excited about my time and performance overall. I finished as the 633 overall woman in the race, out of 19,355 and 109th out of 2,926 in my age group. None of that means anything, except that I was really happy. And now I feel really pushed to work harder and do another race very soon.

Matt did awesome too! He finished just over 56 minutes. But this picture makes me laugh because even though he has never run this distance before AND he finished way ahead of when he thought he would...this picture just takes him down. Because a 12 year old is pacing him. Brutal.

We are looking for our next race to do. I would like to do another 10k, Matt is thinking 5k. Anyone out there doing something fun or have a fun event in their town coming up in the next month? I would love to do something before we leave for Colorado.

Temperature

The song "Temperature" by Sean Paul is not so much appropriate.
But really fun to run to.

So, it of course became the theme of the weekend.
Someone just posted this video onto my Facebook.

The misheard lyrics of Temperature. Absolutely hilarious.
Enjoy!
